Yesterday Britain and Scotland signed an agreement that will allow a vote on Scottish independence. But will Scotland quit the U.K.?
Listen to Pulitzer Center grantee Tim Judah talk about what could happen if Scotland goes for independence. (The video is also embedded below.) One problem is what to do with British nuclear fleet currently housed in Scotland; another is where to draw boundaries — particularly around oil-rich seas. Further questions remain, as Judah reports, about how to replace British-supplied jobs, such as military bases, and whether an independent Scotland would be a member of the E.U., NATO, and other alliances.
While the agreement is historic, opinion polls show only about a third of Scots are in favor of independence, while others support gaining more autonomy. Click here to read more.
